The best exercise routines focus on more than just movement.

In this Senior Living Minute, Ben Broadhead explains the three key pillars of effective senior exercise programs: safety, effectiveness, and fun. By focusing on proper execution, maximizing benefits, and creating an engaging environment, seniors can stay active and actually enjoy their workouts.

Discover how music, movement, and social interaction make exercise more engaging.

Transcript: Good Exercise Routines Are Built Around Safety, Effectiveness, and Fun

There are three main criteria I focus on as an instructor:

  1. Safety: Ensuring exercises are done correctly to avoid injury.
  2. Effectiveness: Optimizing exercises to maximize benefits.
  3. Fun: Creating an enjoyable experience to keep seniors engaged.

To make exercise fun and engaging:

  • Add music and rhythm-based movements.
  • Play games and encourage social interaction.
  • Use nostalgic music—like Elvis or ‘70s hits—which immediately lights up participants’ faces.

When seniors enjoy the experience, they keep coming back.
