Appreciation is more than just a feel-good gesture—it is a powerful leadership tool that drives engagement, motivation, and results.

In this Senior Living Minute, Christy Van Der Westhuizen shares why recognizing every win, big or small—whether it is a move-in or simply booking a tour—can create a stronger, more motivated team. But appreciation is not one-size-fits-all. Learning how your team prefers to be appreciated and making recognition specific and meaningful makes all the difference.

Transcript: Recognizing and Appreciating Every Win Leads to Better Results

I am a big proponent of appreciation. Sometimes, people mistake that for being overly celebratory, but in reality, every win deserves recognition. Whether it is a move-in or simply booking a tour, these are successes that drive momentum.

People receive appreciation differently, so the number one recommendation is to ask your team how they prefer to be recognized. Tailoring appreciation to each individual makes it more impactful.

🔹 Be specific in your appreciation—not just a simple “Thanks for doing a good job.” Instead, say:

➡️ “Thank you for staying late and completing that residency agreement with the family driving in from Ohio. I truly see the time and energy you put into this job, and I appreciate it.”

The bottom line? If you want better results, appreciate more.
