Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools in the senior living sales process. In this Senior Living Minute, Erin Thompson explains why simply listing features—like pools, dining, and activity spaces—won’t help prospects overcome their emotional roadblocks. Instead, sales professionals should focus on sharing transformation stories that provide hope, inspiration, and reassurance. By meeting prospects where they are and helping them feel understood, storytelling becomes a bridge to meaningful connections and confident decisions.

Transcript: Avoid Feature Dumping, Practice Storytelling

Storytelling is by far one of the most vital components of the sales process—and also in engaging residents and encouraging them to participate in activity programs.

Feature dumping is something we all do. We want to talk about the pool, the dining, the activities room, and all of those amenities. But when you have someone in the discovery room who is expressing their concerns, emotions, and uncertainty about convincing their loved one to make this decision, those features don’t matter.

What we want to do is meet them where they are. They need inspiration and hope. They need to see and feel that they are not alone. The one person who can provide that is the sales director or executive director who has real transformation stories to share.

When you share stories, you share perspective. And when you understand the value of your perspective, you can use it to tell stories that help solve other people’s problems.
