Transcript: Avoid Shift Wars by Encouraging Cross-Shift Communication

In senior living—and many workplaces—shift wars are a common issue. It’s often:

  • “If midnights would just do this…”
  • “If days would just do that…”
  • “Afternoons have it the hardest…”

To reduce tension and foster collaboration, we implemented a simple but effective strategy: each shift takes small actions to set up the next shift for success. Instead of focusing on frustrations, the focus shifts to supporting the next team.

A key communication tool was a shared written log between shifts, including:

  • Essential resident updates (eating, drinking, behaviors, personal care)
  • A lighthearted moment from the shift (something funny, cute, or uplifting)
  • Encouragement for team members to navigate challenging days

By promoting communication and teamwork, shifts became more supportive and consistent, ensuring better resident care and stronger workplace morale.
