In this episode of Senior Living Minute, Kelly Singleton Myers shares insights on why adult children should involve their parents early in the senior living decision-making process. While families often lead the conversation, ensuring the prospective resident is part of the journey can reduce fear, increase engagement, and lead to better outcomes. Learn how effective discovery can uncover what truly matters to the individual transitioning into senior living.
In assisted living, we often find ourselves speaking primarily with the adult daughter or son, while the prospective resident may become involved later in the process. However, it is important to ensure that as we engage with the family, we also create opportunities to connect with the prospective resident.
We want them to be an active part of the decision-making process. Understanding what matters most to them is crucial, and through good discovery, we can uncover those insights. While the adult children can share their perspective on what they believe is important, only the prospective resident can truly express their personal priorities, concerns, fears, and even the aspects of senior living they may look forward to.
Helping families recognize the value of early involvement can make the transition less intimidating. By ensuring the prospective resident is engaged throughout the discovery process, we can foster a sense of inclusion, ease anxieties, and create a smoother, more informed decision-making journey.
