Senior living is an experience—how do you sell something intangible?
In this Senior Living Minute, Dave Ensor discusses how sales teams must focus on creating a feeling of trust, security, and belonging to help prospects visualize life in a community.
Learn why the most successful sales strategies focus on emotion, not just amenities.
Every daughter, son, or prospective resident is looking for the same thing: Who is going to take the best care of me or my loved one? The challenge is, there’s no easy way to tell that upfront—there’s no shortcut to making someone feel something. They have to experience it.
There’s an old saying, ‘If you build it, they will come.’ That doesn’t always apply, but in this case, it kind of does. Senior living is about selling an intangible—a feeling of security, community, and belonging. These are things people often take for granted in everyday life, but in senior living, they make all the difference.
So the question becomes: How do we create that feeling? If we build the right environment, the next challenge is simply getting people to visit. Once they step inside, they’ll understand it for themselves.
It’s a process—like meeting a new dog. You wouldn’t run up to an unfamiliar dog, full of excitement, trying to hug it. If you do, that dog will probably bite you. Instead, you approach slowly, extend your hand, and signal, ‘This is okay. I’m okay. We’re okay.’ Once the dog feels at ease, then you can connect.
The same principle applies to senior living. Create the right environment, ease fears, and let people experience the warmth of the community for themselves.
